CARE Awards – Respect

LI: To create a DLO showing respect using photos you have taken.

This shows a group of people showing respect towards each other and their school property. For example, the group are holding their chrome the correct way. This shows respect because if you don’t hold your chromebook the right way you could damage it.

Ratios and Proportions

To kickstart our maths we have started to learn about ratios and proportions. A ratio is comparing two things showing the connection between them. To answer a question given with a ratio or proportion you always have to start with the first object that is given. For example: What is the ratio of 6 squares to 3 circles? As we can see that in the question the first object that is given is the squares, as we can see there are 6 squares, now we compare the 3 circles, which gives us a ratio of 6:3, 6 to 3 or 6/3. Wecan simply 6:3 into 1:2 since it represents one half, But what is proportion? Proportions have different numbers but share the  same value, for eg: 1:2 is the same as 2:4 which is also the same as 4:8. The reason why they are the equal is because they all share equivalent values.

We found this activity interesting because ratios are similar to fractions making it the activity a lot more simple as we already know the standard basic strategies in fractions.

International Current Events

Each day, newspaper editors around the world must make desicions about which stories they will run. We ventured into the different types of current events that are happening in New Zealand, thought about why the story made the news and marked the location on google maps.
Most of the articles that we read took place in New Zealand’s south island, near Christchurch. After analyzing all the articles we read our favorite was the sucsesful launching of weather monitoring satilites into orbit in Mahia Peninsula on the east coast.

Something Happened here

LI: To learn about New Zealand history.

For this assignment we were given a task to explain what happened at our place we landed in. Using a website called somethinghappenedhere.co.nz. Our word we chose was empire. Empire means a very large group of people or a monarch led by one important person. We were given 6 tasks to do. Our tasks was to introduce who Jack Lovelock is, who was Adolf Hitler at the time, and what happened at the 1936 Olympics.

Jack Lovelock was a New Zealand Track athlete who competed in the 1936 Berlin summer Olympics. He won NZ 1 gold medal and received an Oak sapling from the Nazi. The oak sapling can be viewed in Timaru High School.

In 1936, the Olympics were held in Berlin Germany by Adolf Hitler. During the Olympics Jesse Owens who represented the USA, won four gold medals and shocked Hitler. When Owens won his first gold medal in the 100m track, Hitler refused to shake hands with the African/American because he was a negro. Hitlers words were spreaded all across the Berlin Newspaper Headlines. This made Hitler reveal who he truly was and there were a balance of hatred and worship towards him.

I found this activity interesting because we learnt about what happened at this place we chose and found different facts about each person.

Escape From Afghanistan

LI: To explain in fewer words what the text is about.

Our challenge in this activity was to summarise the text in our own words. We were challenged to use powerful vocabulary instead of simpler words. My summary tells the journey of a Refugee is someone who has been forced to escape their country with cause of Persecution and violence, giving these Refugees the capability to have a safe life. Did you know, Refugees leave their homes because life becomes harder and harder mainly because of natural disasters? Most refugees come from afghanistan because they have been threatened by the Taliban (A perilous group of islamic fighters) Most refugees have struggled on their journey to find another place that they can call home. The refugees have been racially profiled because they don’t speak the language that is in the new country they have entered. Refugees risk their lives such as sacrificing their lives by traveling on compromised boats. Both Abbas and Mahdi’s stories have similar reason to flee their previous countries. Most refugees want their children to take a big step into their learning making them the lead to the future, as they are the steps from the past.

I found this Mahdi’s journey heartful because I felt empathy for the refugees as they faced hardships going to new countries.

Tension Graphs

LI: To gauge the tension in a text

From Afghanistan To Aotearoa                                                                  My Name Is Rez

Escape From Afghanistan

Our challenge in this activity was to gauge the tension across the events in the text. We needed to change the line height to show the change in tension as the story progressed.  The level of tension each event was rated (1-10) to show how we were feeling as each event unfolded. This was a collaborative challenge so we needed to have a learning conversation to discuss our ideas and decide the tension level as a group. We did this challenge for the texts ‘Escape From Afghanistan ‘, “From Afghanistan to Aotearoa’ and ‘My name is Rez’.

When I compare these graphs I noticed that the lines go higher and lower at there own timings.

Synthesis Challenge

LI: To compare and contrast the way authors hook us in and build tension in a set of texts.

Our challenge in this activity was to compare and contrast the ways each author built tension and hooked us in using evidence from the texts to support our thinking. When we had read all three texts in the set we wrote a collaborative statement to convince other students why one of the story beginnings was better than the other(s). Our team’s statement was our group has made the decision that “My name is Rez” has the best introduction out of three texts. As It states what Rez’s childhood has been like. For example “We have never had our own homeland”. Meaning that she has endured psychological trauma and emotional scars that will forever be attached to her for the majority of her life. In act 1 it explains that her life is filled with hardships from being punished for getting something incorrect, to having both of her parents’ villages being bombed. The horrors they faced seemed to never end. But in the end she became a lawyer that helps refugees come to New Zealand and she had a successful life.

I found this activity interesting because we got to compare the 3 stories we have read over the past 2 weeks.

DLO About How To Stop Bullies confidence – silver

LI: To create a DLO explaining how to stand up to bullies.

bullying causes harm or worse. Even if there is no physical contact between a bully and their target, people who are bullied may carry the emotional damage of what they experienced for the rest of their lives. That is why it is important to put a stop to bullying. If you are being bullied, then there are things you can do to deal with the bully. In order to stop bullies you can talk to them about what and how they are hurting others.

Kokako Lodge Brochure

LI: To remember and give information about Kokako Lodge

After camp, we created a brochure about information and highlights about our experiences at Kokako Lodge. We used our persuasive skills and gave reasons to why our audience would want to go. We used pictures to show what it is like at Kokako Lodge and what they have to offer for you.

I found this activity interesting because my group had to use our persuasive skills and try and convince the people on why they should go to Kokako Lodge.
