Something Happened here

LI: To learn about New Zealand history.

For this assignment we were given a task to explain what happened at our place we landed in. Using a website called somethinghappenedhere.co.nz. Our word we chose was empire. Empire means a very large group of people or a monarch led by one important person. We were given 6 tasks to do. Our tasks was to introduce who Jack Lovelock is, who was Adolf Hitler at the time, and what happened at the 1936 Olympics.

Jack Lovelock was a New Zealand Track athlete who competed in the 1936 Berlin summer Olympics. He won NZ 1 gold medal and received an Oak sapling from the Nazi. The oak sapling can be viewed in Timaru High School.

In 1936, the Olympics were held in Berlin Germany by Adolf Hitler. During the Olympics Jesse Owens who represented the USA, won four gold medals and shocked Hitler. When Owens won his first gold medal in the 100m track, Hitler refused to shake hands with the African/American because he was a negro. Hitlers words were spreaded all across the Berlin Newspaper Headlines. This made Hitler reveal who he truly was and there were a balance of hatred and worship towards him.

I found this activity interesting because we learnt about what happened at this place we chose and found different facts about each person.

Synthesis Challenge

LI: To compare and contrast the way authors hook us in and build tension in a set of texts.

Our challenge in this activity was to compare and contrast the ways each author built tension and hooked us in using evidence from the texts to support our thinking. When we had read all three texts in the set we wrote a collaborative statement to convince other students why one of the story beginnings was better than the other(s). Our team’s statement was our group has made the decision that “My name is Rez” has the best introduction out of three texts. As It states what Rez’s childhood has been like. For example “We have never had our own homeland”. Meaning that she has endured psychological trauma and emotional scars that will forever be attached to her for the majority of her life. In act 1 it explains that her life is filled with hardships from being punished for getting something incorrect, to having both of her parents’ villages being bombed. The horrors they faced seemed to never end. But in the end she became a lawyer that helps refugees come to New Zealand and she had a successful life.

I found this activity interesting because we got to compare the 3 stories we have read over the past 2 weeks.

Main Idea

LI: To identify the main ideas in the text

This week we have been learning how to find and collaboratively decide on the main idea in a text by negotiating. We read the text Lester and Clyde. This was a text about the consequences of pollution. Our group think the main idea was that if you drop a little bit of rubbish it can have a wider impact on the bigger world. We know this because in the text it shows that the ponds that Lester and Clyde found were polluted by us. We enjoyed this activty because I learnt about the story Lester and Clyde.

Match Girls Strike of 1888

LI: To identify the significance of the Match Girls Strike of 1888.

Today we had a session with David, our PB4L leader. He was teaching us about the match girls strike of 1888. This Strike of 1888 explains the hardships that the match girls went through, this eventually led to a protest trying to raise awareness for women who don’t get appreciate their hard work by not getting paid. I found this task enjoyable because I learnt about the 1888 strike. An interesting fact I learnt during this activity was that the strike was led by Ben Tilett.

Provacation – Fireworks

Today we were given a reading task called provacations. We were told to look at  both perspectives of fireworks. If they should be banned or do we keep them and why. My group and I worked collaboratively durring this reading task. This activity help strenghthen my reading skills.

I liked this activty because I had a chance to work collaboratively.

Collabrative Challenge | Text: Cinderella

LI: To rewrite the story of Cinderella using a different narrative perspective.

We have been continuing our learning about the different perspectives authors bring to a text. Our challenge today was to change the fairy tale of Cinderella from third person omniscient to 2nd person. Third person omniscient means that the author is not a character but knows what the characters think and feel, 2nd person means Second person is when the narrator use pronouns like You or Yourself.  For example: you were sleeping in 8:50 in the morning in which is when school exactly starts. You wake up super late and you have to run to school and you were just 10 minutes late and you remind your teacher that you arrived.

We found this activity interesting because we had a hard time to write down the story with you, your, yours.

5 Perspectives

Collabrative Challenge | Text: Cinderella

5 perspectives – Reading task

LI: To notice what types of point of view are used

For this activty we were given a reading task to make a DLO explaining what is 1st person, 2nd person, 3rd person etc. These also mean point of views. Point of views are how the author knows what is happening in the text. These definitions help me understand more about this task.

1st person – 1st person is the Point of view where the author uses words like I, we and me

2nd person – 2nd person is the perspective the author uses words like your, yours and you.

3rd person – 3rd person is where the author uses words like they he and she.

This activty was really interesting because I had a chance to strengthen my reading skills.

unfamiliar Text | Waltzing Matilda

LI: to make sense of an unfamiliar text

his week we have been looking at making sense of an unfamiliar text. We looked at the title of the poem and made predictions of what the poem was about. We then read the poem and compared our initial predictions to what the text was about. After this, we unpacked the story using our prior knowledge, knowledge of old and new words and mood and atmosphere to make meaning of what the text was about while justifying our thinking with evidence from the poem

I enjoyed this activity because I had a chance to read a new poem from a different country.

Mood chart

For this activity we had to make a mood chart listing words that we thought Charlie felt. We listed multiple words using the help of wordhippo. This helped us find stronger words to add to our mood chart. Using the information we got from the movie we could add it into our mood chart. I really enjoyed this activity because I got to collaborate with my group.

Characterisation

LI: To Make a DLO on characterisation.

For this activity we were given reading task to make a DLO on What is characterisation?  Characterisation is the creation or construction of a fictional character. It could also mean a description of the nature or features of someone or something.  Characterisation is showing the character’s true side of their personality or seeing how the author describes the character in the story. Characterisation is the way a person or an author describes or shows what a character is like. It’s like trying to make the characters seem believable or life like to the readers or the audience so they can make a connection.

I liked this acitvity because I had a chance to learn about charactrisation and got to strengthen my reading skills.
