Provacation – Fireworks

Today we were given a reading task called provacations. We were told to look at  both perspectives of fireworks. If they should be banned or do we keep them and why. My group and I worked collaboratively durring this reading task. This activity help strenghthen my reading skills.

I liked this activty because I had a chance to work collaboratively.

Informal and Formal Language

Today we were Learning about Informal and formal language. Informal language is where the author uses short sentences. For example they would say I’m gonna buy a pizza. Authors would use contractions also meaning words to easier to read . For instance the author could write, I’d do this for you but… This shows that the author was writing [I would] but made it shorter. Formal language is where the author gives more information. For example they would say Please reach back to me as soon as possible, this shows that the author is trying to tell the reader to call back. Formal language authors would not use contractions meaning the writer is trying to give as much information as possible. For instance the author could write, I would  do this for you but… This shows that the author was writing does not try to make sentences smaller.

I enjoyed this activity because I had the chance to learn what infromal language is and what formal langauage is.

Paper Plane Statistics

LI: To design and make a paper plane that will fly the furthest.

Our team challenge was to reasearch about airplane types (streamlined) and create an airplane to see which would go the farthest

We analysed our data of the paper air planes we flew. The planes we designed were Deltry, Tip Plane, Basic Plane, and Dagger. Our group designed multiple planes to verify which of the planes flew the best. The plane that went the furthest was Tip Plane. Lastly we versed group by group and measured the flight distance accurately.

I found this task hard because there were alot of unique folding making it difficult to catch up with the instructions and creasing the hard parts.

Something we could improve on with our plane is to trial it once so that the tip could stay nice and straight.

Manaiakalani Film Festival

Today was the Manaiakalani Film Festival. This is a time where all the schools promoted by Manaiakalani showed movies by students in our school. This was located at the Hoyts Cinema in Sylvia park. This was the 15th Film Festival. The movie I enjoyed was the Pokeblade movie created by Panmure Bridge School.

Facts about kiwis

LI: To learn how to use tone, blending and different brush strokes with paint.

We have been learning how to incorporate tones, blending and brush strokes with our art using paint. We chose a bird that is endemic to New Zealand and researched five facts about them. We chose birds because the New Zealand bird of the year award is going to be announced soon on the 31st of October. We looked through different videos that taught us about the technique used in order to get a nice background.

I found this activity interesting because I was able to learn different painting techniques.

Collabrative Challenge | Text: Cinderella

LI: To rewrite the story of Cinderella using a different narrative perspective.

We have been continuing our learning about the different perspectives authors bring to a text. Our challenge today was to change the fairy tale of Cinderella from third person omniscient to 2nd person. Third person omniscient means that the author is not a character but knows what the characters think and feel, 2nd person means Second person is when the narrator use pronouns like You or Yourself.  For example: you were sleeping in 8:50 in the morning in which is when school exactly starts. You wake up super late and you have to run to school and you were just 10 minutes late and you remind your teacher that you arrived.

We found this activity interesting because we had a hard time to write down the story with you, your, yours.

5 Perspectives

Collabrative Challenge | Text: Cinderella

5 perspectives – Reading task

LI: To notice what types of point of view are used

For this activty we were given a reading task to make a DLO explaining what is 1st person, 2nd person, 3rd person etc. These also mean point of views. Point of views are how the author knows what is happening in the text. These definitions help me understand more about this task.

1st person – 1st person is the Point of view where the author uses words like I, we and me

2nd person – 2nd person is the perspective the author uses words like your, yours and you.

3rd person – 3rd person is where the author uses words like they he and she.

This activty was really interesting because I had a chance to strengthen my reading skills.

Symbols

This week we have been learning the main reasons behind using the celebration symbols. We used our researching skills to find the key ideas behind the celebration. The purpose of this activity is to help us learn what the symbols mean and how and why they are used it that celebration.

I found this activity intresting because I learnt that qwanza is a very important celebration to some countries.

Cultrual celebrations and tranditions

This week we have been looking at where different celebrations are held around the world. We used our smart searching skills to locate countries/places where Hannukah, Kwanzaa, Eid, Christmas and Diwali are celebrated. The objective of this activity was to build an understanding of how despite cultural barriers, people should still respect and acknowledge other celebrations.

I found this activity intresting because I learnt that a lot of east asian countries celebrate diwali.

unfamiliar Text | Waltzing Matilda

LI: to make sense of an unfamiliar text

his week we have been looking at making sense of an unfamiliar text. We looked at the title of the poem and made predictions of what the poem was about. We then read the poem and compared our initial predictions to what the text was about. After this, we unpacked the story using our prior knowledge, knowledge of old and new words and mood and atmosphere to make meaning of what the text was about while justifying our thinking with evidence from the poem

I enjoyed this activity because I had a chance to read a new poem from a different country.
